Sri Lanka created history by defeating India by 110 runs in the third ODI. With this, the team also achieved the feat of defeating India in an ODI series after 27 years. The team last won an ODI series against India in 1997.

The biggest reason for India's defeat in the series was poor batting. Apart from this, the team was also defeated by excessive experimentation and Sri Lanka's spin bowling. Team India has lost its first series under the leadership of coach Gautam Gambhir. Earlier, the team had defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 in the T-20 series.

1. Player of the Match
In the ODI series, Sri Lanka's Dunith Vellalaage dominated Team India in both batting and bowling. In the third ODI too, Vellalaage turned the game around. He could score only 2 runs, but took 5 wickets for just 27 runs in bowling. He scored 108 runs in the series and also took 7 wickets. For this performance, he was selected as Player of the Match and Player of the Series.

2. 3 heroes of victory
Hero-1 Avishka Fernando: Sri Lankan opener Avishka Fernando could not perform well in the first 2 ODIs. However, he made a comeback in the third match and played an innings of 96 runs. Avishka first made a partnership of 89 runs with Pathum Nissanka and then 82 runs with Kusal Mendis.
 
Hero-2 Kusal Mendis: Former Sri Lankan ODI captain Kusal Mendis shone in the third match. He shared an 82-run partnership with Avishka Fernando. Then he stayed till the end, scored a fifty and brought the score close to 250. Mendis scored 59 runs. 
Hero-3 Jeffrey Vandersay: Jeffrey Vandersay, who took 6 wickets in the second ODI, took 2 wickets in the third match. He took important wickets of Riyan Parag and Shivam Dubey. Both were leading the team towards victory by making partnerships in the lower order.
 
3. Fighter of the Match
Riyan Parag made his debut for India, he showed fight in bowling and took 3 wickets. At one time Sri Lanka seemed to be reaching close to the score of 300. Then Parag sent set batsman Avishka to the pavilion and the scoring rate decreased. Parag also took the wickets of Charith Aslanka and Dunith Vellalaage.

5. Match report

Sri Lanka's strong start
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat and the top order gave a strong start. The team lost only 2 wickets till the score of 171 runs. The team scored 248 runs without loss in 50 overs. Riyan Parag from India took 3 wickets.

India did not last even 30 overs. India
had a bad start, the team lost 3 wickets in the first powerplay. India then lost 7 wickets at the score of 100 runs. India was all out at 128 runs after playing 26.1 overs and lost the match by 110 runs. With this, Sri Lanka won the 3 ODI series 2-0.
