Google's highly anticipated Pixel 9 series is just around the corner, but the latest leaks on its Tensor G4 chipset might dampen the enthusiasm of those hoping for a significant performance leap.
According to a recent report by Android Authority, the Tensor G4 appears to be a modest upgrade over its predecessor, the Tensor G3.
Tensor G4: Incremental Upgrades
The Tensor G4 processor introduces a 4+3+1 core configuration, utilizing ARMv9.2 cores: Cortex-A520, Cortex-A720, and Cortex-X4. Although clock speeds are slightly higher than the previous model, the overall multi-core performance may only see minor improvements. Initial Geekbench scores indicate around an 11% enhancement in single-core performance and a 3% increase in multi-core performance compared to the Tensor G3.
The changes in core layout aim to improve cooling efficiency and reduce power consumption. Despite these enhancements, the Exynos Modem 5400 remains the main power consumer. This new modem supports satellite connectivity and offers up to 50% better power efficiency than the Exynos Modem 5300, which might still be used in some Tensor G4 devices like the Pixel 9a.
GPU and Other Components
The Tensor G4 continues to feature the Mali-G715 GPU, now clocked at 940 MHz, up from 890 MHz in the Tensor G3. Google's custom IP blocks-Edge TPU, GXP, BigWave, and Titan M2-remain unchanged, ensuring consistent performance in AI, camera tasks, and security functions. The chip also retains Samsung's FOPLP packaging technology, contrary to earlier rumors suggesting an upgrade to FOWLP.
Development Hurdles
Initial plans for the Tensor G4 included a fully custom chip codenamed "redondo," developed independently of Samsung. However, due to missed deadlines, Google opted for a minimal upgrade codenamed "zumapro," produced in collaboration with Samsung. This approach helped expedite the development of the Pixel 9 series, using Tensor G3 prototypes to streamline the process.
Pixel 9 Series and Launch Event
The upcoming Pixel 9 series, powered by the Tensor G4, is expected to offer enhancements mainly through software-based features rather than significant hardware changes. Google will reveal more details about the Tensor G4's performance and benchmark scores at the Made by Google event on August 13. The event will also showcase other new products, including the Pixel Watch 3.
